Six students from University College Isle of Man are creating a night to remember with favourite game-shows from the past to help those who cannot remember… Or something like that 🤷‍♂️

As part of their Events Management and Marketing degree, students have to plan, produce and stage a charitable event. Their chosen charity is Alzheimers Society Isle of Man and the event is ‘Flashback Friday’; chosen because it has many close ties to the students and also provides a great amount of support for careers and people living with the condition on Island. One of the student’s close relatives was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s a few years ago and it’s been a tough ride. It’s awful to see someone you love degenerate slowly to the point they can’t even complete basic tasks or remember family members. With over 700 charities registered on the Isle of Man – It’s often a condition that is forgotten about – no pun intended!

What Actually is Dementia?

Dementia is a term used to describe a number of different conditions affecting the brain. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, with symptoms including memory loss, difficulties with thinking, problem-solving and language. There are currently around 850,000 people in the UK living with dementia, with numbers only set to rise to 2 million by 2051 out of them numbers, 1,300 are living with the disease on the Isle of Man.

225,000 will develop dementia this year, that’s one every three minutes.1 in 6 people over the age of 80 have dementia.

Alzheimer’s can take away people’s independence and ability to complete even basic day to day tasks. With no cure, they’re all rather terrifying facts!

Where might your money be spent?

£5 could pay for one person to attend a half hour support session at a Dementia Café.£50 could fund a Dementia Helpline adviser for an hour, as they provide a listening ear.£120 could pay to run an online community for people affected by dementia, which offers a safe place to share experiences and also receive advice and support.

The Main Event

The idea behind ‘Flashback Friday’ was to go back through the generations and remember decades gone by (pure coincidence its taking place on a Friday btw).Ready to get your game on? The evening will consist of some of the UK’s most famous TV gameshows; Name that Tune, Catchphrase and Who Wants to be a Millionaire.Tickets are £35 per person, with all money raised remaining on the Isle of Man to help support the 1,300-people living with Alzheimer’s.Sound like something you’d enjoy?Yes, Is that your final answer?
