Planners have given their backing to plans to convert a former pub into flats.

Formerly the Corner House Pub (Wheatsheaf), the building was converted into office space in the late 2000’s.

Ramsey based Pop Investments has been granted permission to convert Armitage House, which is opposite the fountain near Douglas’ Town Hall, into six flats, with plans for a gym on the ground floor.

When it submitted its plans, the company said there was a ‘lack of demand for commercial space’. The scope of the work includes the refurbishment and alterations of the building at ground, first and second floor levels.

In giving backing, planners said: ‘The proposal is considered to bring a new lease of life to a building which is currently being underutilised, with the addition of new bike store and bin storage area, considered to have positive impacts on the property and the surrounding area.

‘The impacts on parking is also considered acceptable considering the property is situated along a public transport corridor, within close proximity to the town centre and easy reach of large parking provisions.’
