Glamping Plan for Baldwin

A planning application could see a stunning part of the island’s countryside play home to a new tourist offering.

Dr Ram Singh Bhadouria’s application (23/01155/B) is for land adjacent to Bridge House on West Baldwin Road.

The proposal is for five tourism pods within the field to the north west of the house along with the conversion of a workshop into an activity hall with kitchen, toilets, therapy room, two one bed rooms and a dormitory room with bunk beds.

This would be ‘primarily aimed at walkers stopping off overnight at the site, perhaps as part of the Millennium Way long distance footpath’.

Details provided in a planning statement prepared by Sarah Corlett Town Planning Consultancy, say that the pods would be roughly 7.5m square with a small verandah area which will accommodate a hot tub.

The pods would each have two bedrooms, a bathroom and a lounge/kitchen and on the upper level, a star gazing platform and would not be visible from the roadside bank.

The statement adds: ‘The applicant aspires to create a beautiful, natural haven where people may stay, learn and visit, which respects and enhances the natural ecology of the area and results in biodiversity net gain. The applicant has sought advice from professionals in ecology, drainage and tourism and has sought to design a unique form of tourist unit which is suitable for this site.

‘The proposal supports the government’s Tourism Strategy whilst enhancing the biodiversity of the site and where the proposed built structures are sensitively located so as not to be offensive or harmful to the appearance and character of the area, to users of the footpath or to the nearby residents.’
