Jaks Owner Submits New Plans for Villa

The owner of Jaks and Barbary Coast, Dazan Ltd, has submitted a new planning application for its proposed new restaurant in the Villa Arcade.

A previous application, which was rejected by planners because of plans to enclose the colonnade, is also subject to an appeal which was submitted on March 11.

The proposal is, much like the previous one, to change a disused shop into a restaurant.

In its application, the company said: ‘The promenade has been redeveloped with specific emphasis on the development of a public space around the Gaiety Theatre. The proposed facility will provide family orientated eating and drinking facilities to encourage more activity in and around the theatre and the Villa Marina prior to and after performances, as well as eating and drinking facilities during the remainder of the day.’

If approved, the restaurant would be open from 9am to 1am seven days a week. But unlike the previous application would not include an enclosed seating area outside.

An appeal against the previous application’s rejection was submitted on grounds that: ‘The colonnade area is private land and therefore not a public realm. The colonnade is a post-Victorian addition to the Villa Marina/Gaiety complex and has been subject to previous contemporary glazed additions. Section 7.6 of the Area Plan refers to strategic routes/transport policies which are irrelevant to the reasons for refusal.’
