An MHK who asked residents whether they want a change at the top of the Manx gov says the response ‘is a very clear YES’.

Onchan MHK Rob Callister, who Alf Cannan sacked as health minister last year, asked his constituents and others across the island on a number of community Facebook pages.

Mr Callister posed the question by using the recent examples of Jersey and Guernsey, which have both deposed their chief ministers in recent months.

Reflecting on the responses, Mr Callister said: ‘Taking into account my own social media platforms, along with the comments posted on Manx Radio, IOM Newspapers and, GEF and Energy FM, 3 FM and other media outlets, which ran into hundreds and hundreds of comments – the response is a very clear YES…

‘It’s now for my political colleagues to ask the same question to their constituents, because a single MHK cannot bring the change without the support of political colleagues and the Manx Public. Thank you – and free feel to like and share this post to continue the debate, in order to ensure you get the change the island is asking for.’

In the responses on the popular Isle of Man News and Politics Facebook page, most were in favour of a change of leadership, but few had any answer as to who they’d like to see take over, not that the public has much, if any, say in the matter.

However, there was also support for Alf Cannan staying in the top job from those who do believe the gov is succeeding, but mostly from those who see no viable alternative.

We asked the gov whether Mr Cannan would like to respond to Mr Callister’s challenge, but at the time of publication we have received no response beyond an acknowledgement of our email.

However, appearing on Manx Radio’s Budget programme, Mr Cannan batted away suggestions he could resign and said: ‘This government has been delivering. It’s been delivering for two and a half years and it’s going to keep on delivering for the next two and a half years.’
