Cracks Appearing in Tynwald: Glover Targets Cannan with No Confidence Bid

Minister Alfred Cannan is facing a big ol’ ‘no confidence’ motion next Tuesday, October 29, courtesy of Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Tim Glover.

It’s a non-statutory vote, meaning it would be up to Mr. Cannan to step down, but IF Mr. Glover gathers enough support for his motion, it would place significant pressure on him to do so.

Had it been a statutory vote, the entirety of the Council of Ministers would have had to step down and would lead to an effective reset.

Mr Glover sent an email to 23 MHKs yesterday afternoon (Monday).

It reads: ‘Just to confirm I have tabled a motion of no confidence in the chief minister for next week’s sitting of the House of Keys.

‘I could have used standing orders to force this tomorrow but I am aware there are ministers absent and it would have been a straight vote.
‘This way means there will be a debate and this email means you have more time to prepare ahead of the order paper being published.
‘I have not contacted any media but I realise I can’t prevent any of you doing so – they will obviously become aware when the order paper is published.’
In response, the Chief Minister has said ‘he is ‘getting on with the job of addressing the issues that matter to the Manx public’. 
He continued: ‘There is much to resolve, not least the delivery of healthcare and our financial sustainability.

‘I am focused on the job. My diary is not changing and together with colleagues across Government we have a busy week ahead.’
