DoI Can’t Say What Cost Is

With the delayed and over budget Liverpool ferry terminal likely to be finished this year, the DoI Minister has told MHKs it ‘would not be appropriate to suggest the final figure at this stage’.

Responding to a question from Jason Moorhouse (Arbory, Castletown and Malew), Mr Thomas said the terminal building will be finished ‘late May/early June’.
However, while internal fittings are underway, the scour protection, which caused some anger from members when the DoI delivered the bill for that to Tynwald back in December 2021.
Mr Thomas said that 70% of the scour protection (which was budgeted at £3.5m last time we had an update) has been installed but he wouldn’t give a completion date at this stage, but did refer to autumn 2023.
The last confirmed budget for the scheme was £70.6m, but Mr Thomas has yet to disclose what it has risen to since Tynwald approved that figure.
The move from the current Pier Head site was taken out the Steam Packet’s hands as Liverpool’s Council is still seeking to build a new cruise terminal there. However, the decision by Tynwald and the Manx gov to get involved in buying and building on the site has long proven controversial, particularly as costs have risen.
