EV Usage Charging up
Tim Johnston MHK was named the new MU chair last month.
Monthly revenues of between £4,000 and £5,000 from public EV charging points show that usage has roughly doubled in the last year.
The figures have been released by Manx Utilities chairman Tim Johnston after a question from Speaker Juan Watterson.
To date, MU has spent £263,170 on installing 85 public charging points, which would give an average cost of £3,096 per socket. However, as some, such as the rapid charging unit at the Sea Terminal, cost more than others, this isn’t a true figure.
Asked by Mr Watterson how plans are to be recouped, Mr Johnston said that installation costs are ‘expected to be recovered from revenue generated from charging customers for the use of the public charging network’ and from additional revenue generate’.
He added that additional revenue will be generated from private charging, ‘arising from drivers being confident to purchase an electric vehicle due to the availability and reliability of the public charging network’.
The charge point roll out programme is driven by the gov’s prediction of 3,000 EVs on the roads by 2025 and the EU’s directive of 1 charging socket per 10 electric vehicles. Mr Johnston said: ‘The approach is reviewed annually and commented upon within Manx Utilities’ published annual tariff review.’
