Hooper’s Bid to Axe Bishop’s Vote

Ramsey MHK Lawrie Hooper is to ask MHKs to support his bid to remove the vote from the island’s next Bishop.
With Peter Eagles retiring over the weekend, the island is now without a Bishop.
When Keys sits on Tuesday, the Lib Vannin leader will seek leave to introduce a Bill to ‘provide that the Bishop shall cease to have the right to vote in Tynwald or the Council whilst retaining membership thereof’.
Earlier this year Tynwald voted against Joney Faragher’s (Douglas East) bid to remove the Bishop from parliament.
The Manx Labour Party leader said that her motion was only supported by eight MHKs, including Mr Hooper.
Speaking in favour of the motion, Mr Hooper said the argument that Lord Lisvane, in his long forgotten by most report, had said the island should keep the Bishop in Tynwald was a case of an unelected person from an unelected chamber recommending an unelected person should keep their unelected seat.
He also noted that in the past Tynwald has managed to get along fine when the island existed without a Bishop.
