I Lose a lot of Sleep Worrying

‘Whatever happens, I dread the coming months.’

After our Jean-jee red ennagh series, where our readers told us their thoughts and concerns of the cost of living crisis, we asked the same readers for their response to the gov’s support package.

This is one parent’s response.

Whilst I can appreciate the steps put in place to make using buses more appealing, what about the parents that have to do school drop off and then drive to work? What about petrol/diesel prices? With regards to utility prices, what will happen next April when prices rise? Does our electricity come from the incinerator like we were told it could do when the complex was first built, or are we selling that to the Uk?

I lose a lot of sleep, worrying about how I will keep a roof over my children’s heads, how I will keep food on the table and so much more.

Not only is this having an affect on people’s ‘disposable’ income it is having a serious detrimental effect on people’s mental well-being, and marriages/relationships are falling apart as a result of a combination of covid, lockdowns, work stresses and now serious financial difficulties.

We are a nation of broken souls, who are fighting against the tide, and slowly drowning.

I don’t know what the answer is, but it has got to be more than just sticking a plaster on the wound (or a temporary price cap). Government grants to get renewable energy in to as many homes as possible might be a good place to start? Heat pumps, solar panels etc, ok so people would be paying a small ‘loan’ but the overall price of electricity and minimal gas use would certainly be a weight off many people’s minds.

Whatever happens, I dread the coming months.
