It’s Time for Tim
There have been six DfE ministerial changes since October 2021.
The ever revolving door of DfE Ministers has its latest entrant, with Tim Johnston the latest CoMin recruit.
The Ayre and Michael MHK has become the sixth man to hold the position in one form or another since in this administration.
Chief Minister Alfred Cannan said: ‘I am pleased to welcome Tim to the Council of Ministers. Tim has spent the last 16 months as a Member of the Department for Enterprise and knows the department well, where his commitment and experience has proven invaluable. With our new economic strategy, there is significant work to be done in laying foundations for investment and cementing our economic security for the next 10 years and beyond. Tim will be able to draw on his wealth of experience and knowledge to help drive this forward.’
Mr Johnston added: ‘During my time as a Member for Enterprise I’ve seen first-hand the complexity of our economic ecosystem and the significant role government can play in creating the right conditions for the economy to grow and prosper. The world is changing quickly, and by accepting the invitation to become minister, I am looking to provide clear leadership and deliver targeted support in order to fully deliver on our plans for a secure, vibrant and sustainable future.’
What makes mr Johnston’s appointment extra interesting is the second paragraph of his manifesto from September 2021.
He said: ‘I repeat my clear commitment that if I am elected on September 23rd, I will not take on a ministerial position in the new administration. If asked, I may well become a departmental member to understand better the workings of Government but ultimately, my main priority is to serve you, the people of Ayre and Michael, and in doing so, to build trust and to ensure you have an approachable, accountable Member of the House of Keys working on your behalf.’
