Douglas North MHK John Wannenburgh has voiced his concern over the appointment of a new head at Willaston Primary School.

It was announced last week that Max Kelly, executive head of Laxey and Dhoon schools, will replace Rose Burton after she retires in December.

In a post on his Facebook page, Mr Wannenburgh said he had written to DESC Minister Julie Edge over the appointment, saying ‘frankly I am concerned about this direction’.

He said: ‘As you already know, it is my view that this school has been marginalised for some time and for whatever reason.

‘Both David [Ashford MHK] & I have said that this school is the poor relation, as evidenced by our ongoing campaign for a new mobile classroom. However, the one thing that Willaston has enjoyed, has been the steadfast leadership of a dedicated head teacher, in Rose Burton. I was sorry to learn that Rose is retiring at the end of the year, she will be sorely missed.

‘I welcome change providing it is well thought out and reasoned; I offer no argument nor dispute the facts, if they point to an enhanced learning experience and scope for the pupils of Willaston School. This is too important to get wrong.

‘I look forward to hearing the rationale behind this decision – but – I cannot hide behind political compromise, and if this is a simple cost cutting exercise that is expected to be borne by these children, that is unjust, and I will have to resist in any and all ways that I can.

‘I look forward to hearing your assessment.’

Mr Kelly currently oversees Laxey and Dhoon schools as executive head, with deputy heads based in each school. At the same time as Mr Kelly’s appointment, it was also announced that Adrian Shorthouse would be taking over at Scoill Yn Jubilee, while also keeping his role as head teacher of Kewaigue.

Gef has approached the DESC for a response to Mr Wannenbugh’s concerns.
