More Cash For The Nation’s Station

It looks like Manx Radio’s funding is on the rise, even if their profits have taken a slight dip.

Despite a loss of £1,888 for the financial year ending March 2024 – compared to last year’s £14,524 profit – the island’s public service broadcaster is still getting a hefty boost in public funding.

Manx Radio’s subvention (that’s taxpayers cash to you and me) has increased to a whopping £1,127,642 for 2023/24.

That’s almost the same as the station’s total turnover, and a tidy £38,133 more than they got last year.

And guess what?

The subvention is expected to climb even higher next year, to £1,334,022.

With an extra £150,000 earmarked for Minor Capital Works, the station’s future looks pretty secure for now.

Manx Radio boss Chris Sully remains positive, calling the small loss an ‘achievement’ given the tough commercial market.

Plus, the station has been busy growing its digital empire, with nearly 100 podcasts and listener figures bouncing back to pre-pandemic levels, averaging 27,750 weekly listeners—about 41% of the island’s market share.

So for those wondering where your taxpayer money’s going, rest easy – you’ll get to hear Dennis from Ballaugh moaning to Andy Wint on Mannin Line for years to come!
