MP Calls for New Summerland Inquiry

An MP has criticised the Manx government for its response to his request for a new Summerland inquiry.
Justin Madders was speaking as the House of Commons debated the fire, which claimed 50 lives in 1973, for the first time.
Mr Madders said he had spoken to the Manx government, but was disappointed by its response to his request for a ‘Hillsborough’ style inquiry.
He said: ‘I expected more than the response I received, which simply directed me to the inquiry of 1973.’
Mr Madders said he had since heard about plans for the 50th anniversary memorial and speech by the Chief Minister Alf Cannan in Tynwald next week.
He and other MPs, also said that the island should recognise that the death by misadventure ruling handed down at the official inquiry was ‘inappropriate’.
As well as Mr Cannan’s speech next week, there is to be a national service of remembrance on July 30.
While the requests for apology have been aimed at the Manx government, Summerland was built, owned and operated by Douglas Council at the time of the fire.
