No Record of Post Box Consultation

The Clerk of Onchan Commissioners has said he has no record of formal communications regarding the now infamous repainting of a post box.

Isle of Man Post Office recently repainted Onchan’s post box, painted gold to celebrate Pete Kennaugh’s London 2012 gold medal, red only for it to announce a u-turn following public pressure.

In a statement announcing the u-turn, the post office’s CEO Simon Knew said: ‘Prior to repainting the box red, we did speak to the Kennaugh family and out of courtesy had informed Onchan District Commissioners and the Sub Postmaster of Onchan Post Office. We hope Mr Kennaugh and his family and our customers will be pleased with our decision to return the box gold.’

However, at its public meeting in Monday evening, following a question from commissioner David Quirk, clerk Ross Phillips said he had searched inboxes and only found comments from members of the public saying the post box, as well as the gold telephone box at the top of Royal Avenue, well looking shabby. He added that staff also had no record of speaking to the Post Office.

Speaking to Gef last week, Pete also denied that he, or his family, were consulted over the change.
