Six Month Vehicle Tax Coming This Year

DoI Minister Chris Thomas has confirmed that the gov will finally be offering motorists the option of paying for their vehicle tax in six month instalments.

It has been a long journey to this basic of systems, which has been on offer to drivers in the UK for quite some time.
In July 2020, the then minister Tim Baker said they would beo move rates based on engine capacity to vehicle weight rolled out by the end of that year. That obviously didn’t happen.
We were then expecting them to be introduced by April of that year, however that came at the same time as a controversial idea to move rates based on engine capacity to vehicle weight. After 6,000 islanders objected to this in a petition, that too was dropped.
Under those proposals, six-month payments would only have been available to drivers whose vehicles cost more than £200 a year in road tax, with an additional 10% charged on top.
Now, Mr Thomas appears to finally be the one to introduce the system, saying: ‘Subject to Treasury concurrence and Council of Ministers agreeing for it to go on an Order Paper, the New Vehicle Duty Order which contains this option can be presented to Tynwald this Autumn.’
However, we don’t yet have the details around what else will be included in that Order, or how it will go down with the public.
