Time for a New Chief?
Most responses were in favour of a change of leadership, but many said nothing would happen
Onchan MHK Rob Callister is asking residents whether the Isle of Man should follow the Channel Islands and oust its government.
Mr Callister, who was sacked after just eight weeks as health minister, posed the question on several Facebook groups.
After the budget and the 2% rise in income tax (even if the principle of using it to pay for health and social care is largely supported), partnered with what some have said is a declining quality of life on the island, social media has been lit up this week with some calling for ministers to resign and some even went as far as calling for a general election to be called.
In his post, Mr Callister said: ‘In recent months both Jersey and Guernsey have replaced their Chief Minister and having received so many comments in recent weeks from constituents calling for the same here, I want to ask: Is the Isle of Man really asking their politicians to follow the same path and to make a genuine mid-term change of direction in this government and this administration?’
In the responses on the popular Isle of Man News and Politics Facebook page, most were in favour of a change of leadership, but few had any answer as to who they’d like to see take over, not that the public has much, if any, say in the matter.
However, one commenter was strongly in favor of Mr Cannan staying on providing he ‘clear the dead wood and sort this mess out’.
Some commenters pointed to a lack of will in Tynwald to make such a move with one resident saying it is ‘very unlikely’ that there would be a serious challenge to Mr Cannan’s leadership.
