Watch: Quick Change Can Happen

The British Medical Association’s chair of Council Prof Philip Banfield has said he is hopeful that the culture can improve for medics on the island within a short timeframe.

Prof Banfield was talking on the same that a survey revealed that doctors continue to have concerns about management at the hospital.

While raising concerns over the lack of confidence doctors have in the senior leadership of Manx Care, Prof Banfield said that following talks with DHSC Minister Lawrie Hooper, he is confident change in that culture is possible quickly.

He said: ‘I met with Mr Hooper today and some of the team, we agreed not to talk about Dr Rosalind Ranson’s case, because the is a live case, so I focused more about the possibility that there is a cultural void going within Manx Care and that that possibility has been strengthened by the findings in our survey.

‘That should be a worry for the minister, that should be a worry for Manx Care and we’ve agreed that the observation that this is a possibility is acknowledged and therefore that we can do something about. So I’m quite positive about working with the doctors and then working with Manx Care to make sure that that culture improves in [a] very short timeframe.’

However, he did warn that if people try to suppress change and people raising genuine concerns, then it is ‘worrying’ for the island as a whole.
