You’ll Get Your Say on Bishop
A motion to adjourn from Rob Callister was backed by MHKs
Lawrie Hooper’s bid to strip the bishop’s vote from LegCo and Tynwald will go out to public consultation in the new year.
MHKs debated the issue in Keys on Tuesday.
As a result of a motion to adjourn by Onchan MHK Rob Callister, the matter will now go to a public consultation.
Mr Callister said in Keys: ‘I consider the removal of the Lord Bishop’s vote to be a major constitutional and historical change in respect of the workings of our Manx Parliament and I would argue strongly that the people of this island – whether they are in favour or against this draft bill – they should be given a fair opportunity to have their say.’
MHKs voted 13-11 in favour of the matter going to a public consultation and it will now not return to Keys until Mr Hooper has presented a report on that consultation.
