Cav Breaks Record, as he Aims for Another
Cav is seeking to win his 35th stage on the Tour this summer
In the year he’s chasing a date with destiny at the Tour de France, Manx Missile Mark Cavendish has broken another record.
The British Road Race champion, who joined the Astana Qazaqstan team earlier this year, is aiming to break Eddy Merckx’s record of 34 stage wins, which he equalled in 2021.
Cav’s latest result, on Wednesday, saw him pick up a podium finish at Scheldeprijs, in the Netherlands. Of the eight times Cavendish has started the race, he’s landed on the podium seven times, winning three times. He was previously tied with Belgian Ernest Sterckx who had six podiums between 1946 and 1954 and is two shy of tying Marcel Kittel for most victories.
Cycling Weekly has reported that when asked what the Scheldeprijs podium says about his chances for taking the Tour de France record, Cavendish refused to speculate.
He said: ‘It’s always nice for a result, but it doesn’t have a bearing on how we’ll be going in July.’
The build up to the Tour continues next week with the Giro di Sicilia, before the team head to the Giro d’Italia, where Cav won a stage last year.
