A celebration of the island’s oldest sports club has raised over £2,000 for a motor neurone charity.

Douglas Rugby Club celebrated its 150th anniversary with a gala dinner attended by over 30 past and present club captains.

As well as the dinner, the club has published a book detailing its 150 year history which also lists every senior player to have pulled on the teams colours.

The money raised is going to the MND charity My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, which was created by Scottish rugby legend Doddie Weir who raised £8 million for MND research by the time that he died from this condition late last year.

Through his visits to the island, Weir had built up a relationship with the club which included a club dinner in 2016 where he rucked the club president across the floor.

The club said: ‘We had a fantastic time celebrating the 150th anniversary of Douglas Rugby Club, with many faces past and present who have worn their jersey with pride.

‘It was also a privilege to be able to have raised £2,074 for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation . Thank you to everyone who helped us reach this figure, and we can’t not share some of the varying degrees of the styling of the Doddie snood from Freddie and Taylor Hollis, Jack Shimmin, Carly Snellgrove, and Simon Hoddinott.’

Erin Wilson, a fundraising coordinator from the charity, said: It was very kind of the club to choose to raise money on the night for the Foundation. We are sure Doddie would have been touched by the donation. We very much appreciate the support.’
