Inaugural Rugby Cup This Weekend

Sunday will see 150 school kids taking part in the inaugural Tag Rugby School’s Cup.

The cup has been organised by Douglas Rugby Club for school years two and three.

With 24 teams and 150 kids taking to the field, the cup will be one of the largest rugby events ever staged on the island and will give children a chance to try a sport which has always been recognised as a game for everyone.

Regardless of skill or experience, the tag rugby tournament will see mixed teams of four playing non-contact games across 12 pitches in a qualifying group stage format.

Following this, there will be elimination games which will see one school’s team crowned the first ever tag rugby island champions.

Mark Varley from Douglas Club told Gef that the club is ready for action.

He said: ‘We’ve worked hard to organise an exciting tournament for the kids, and we can’t wait to get the games underway. To have 150 excited children take part across 12 pitches at Douglas will be great to see, and we encourage spectators to come down and cheer the teams on!’

The club has thanked Santander International for its continued support of Douglas RUFC and Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management – UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man for sponsoring the event.

School teams are reminded to arrive and sign-in before 12.20pm with a players’ briefing starting at 12.35pm.

The action gets underway shortly after for a full afternoon of rugby, hot food and drinks will be available and spectators are more than welcome.
