Special Olympics Team’s Epic Medal Haul

The island’s Special Olympics team is basking in gold this weekend after a successful time at the Gibraltar National Games 2022.
Not only did the team get to enjoy weather that has been somewhat better than ours, they have been racking up medals for fun.
On the first day of the competition, the team picked up double gold in the 4x100m relay, Jamie Hardy then went on to claim gold in the 200m, while teammates Ethan Butler and Peter Taylor were just outside the medals, finishing fourth and fifth. Hardy also picked up silver in the 100m and Dylan Butler also claimed himself a silver medal.
The second day saw the island clinch yet more gold in the football, where they beat the host team 7-6, before a commanding 8-1 win ensured football was coming home.
In the Bocce, Rebecca Mallar and Nicola Woolridge claimed yet more gold for team Isle of Man, the two Julies, Crellin and Hindstrige, claimed silver and the team overall came away with a silver medal.
Elsewhere, the bowling team came within a whisker of gold, but it just wasn’t to be, as they came home with a strong second place, silver medal.
Just incase you thought they were done testing the baggage allowance on their flight home, the team also had success in the pool, with the whole team, consisting of Julie Hinstridge, Katie Dulson, Rebecca Maller and Angela Maiden, all bringing home a medal.
The team said: ‘Julie 25m Free Bronze at 43.04 seconds, 25m free Katie 4th on 26.66 and Rebecca 5th on 28.08, 50m Free Angela Silver with a time of 1:05.27, 25m Breaststroke Katie Bronze. 50m Breaststroke Angela 4th on 1:19.22 and our last solo event 25m Backstroke Gold for Rebecca on 28.39 seconds and 5th for Julie on 44.57 seconds. Four teams battled in the 4x 25m freestyle and IoM finished 4th with a time of 2:13.34.’
When the team left the island the other day, we asked them to go do us proud, they have done more than that, they’ve been bloody brilliant. Massive congratulations to the whole team, their coaches and supporters.
