Watch: Magic Rennie’s Dominant Display

Manx boxer Matty Rennie says his win at the weekend has given him the launchpad to kickstart a good year in the ring.

Rennie continued his unbeaten pro-career with a dominant points win over John Henry Mosquera 60-54.

Now based at Jennings Gym in Liverpool, the 25-year-old has won 12 of his professional bouts to date, with one draw the only mark on his record.

Speaking after the bout, Rennie said: ‘I’m made up to get out so early in the year. I finished off December so well in the Moorcroft fight and basically I’m straight back onto it – no rest for the wicked as they say!’

Having skipped the traditional Christmas break in favor of training and keeping sharp, getting another six rounds under his belt in the fashion he did has further enhanced the reputation of the unbeaten Douglas man.

He said: ‘Mosquera wasn’t someone I could overlook but I felt it was a dominant performance and a clear win for me, plus rounds in the bank which is what I want.

‘From the get-go I tried to put him in a shell by doing the basics right and doing them well, and I felt I did that – he didn’t offer too much back but I think that’s down to me putting on a show and producing in a performance that I knew I could.

‘I’m always putting the work in when in the gym, always improving and never get complacent. I always want to do better and I want to get back on the big shows and hopefully get some titles this season – hopefully 2024 will be a good year for me.’

Rennie has made no secret of his desire to win titles and has one eye on the Ethan James v Owen Cooper bout for the English Welterweight Title as one he could face the winner from.

While there would be much to arrange, he said that this is something he’d hope could be arranged later this year or in the summer.

Rennie also thanked his supporters who traveled from the island and his backers, saying ‘without all my sponsors I wouldn’t be able to do this’.
