Icy Roads Likely

If you thought this morning felt a bit slippy underfoot, it wasn’t just your imagination (or your shoes with no grip).

Now, the Met Office has slapped us with a yellow weather warning for ice.

The warning kicked in from 4pm today and lasts until 3am tomorrow, but the island clearly decided to get a head start.

Police dealt with three crashes this morning as some roads turned into budget ice rinks, with drivers discovering very quickly that black ice doesn’t care about your Monday schedule.

According to the Met Office, temperatures have already dropped to around freezing, meaning all that leftover puddle water from our extremely soggy November is about to freeze solid.

Most places should stay dry, but the odd shower could add a fresh sprinkling of slip hazard across the island.

Higher ground might even see some wintry flurries, Christmassy vibes yes, but mostly just inconvenient.

Low-lying coastal routes should escape the worst of it, but everywhere else is fair game. If your road was already a bit damp today, congratulations: it’s probably going to be glass later.

No word as of yet from the DoI regarding gritting or preparing, but we’ll let you know if that changes.

Things should ease overnight as cloud cover and milder air drift in… but in the meantime, take it steady out there.
