WATCH: Cars Damaged and Sick Bags Flying on ‘Horrific’ Manannan Sailing
The Manannan’s final voyage of the year turned into something out of a disaster movie on Sunday night, as the fast craft’s crossing from Liverpool to Douglas became what many passengers have called ‘horrific’ and ‘traumatising’.
Footage shared online and with Gef shows several vehicles damaged on the car deck after reportedly breaking loose during the turbulent trip, which at one point passengers say saw the captain issue a code red (later reduced, thankfully).
Passengers described a scene of silence broken only by the sound of retching, with one saying: ‘The boat should not have sailed… definitely was a situation that could have gone badly wrong!’ Another said simply: ‘It was hell, and it should never have sailed. Traumatised.’
Apparently, it didn’t stop there, some said they only found out it was blowing a force 7 or 8 halfway up the Mersey. Not exactly the kind of surprise you want on a Sunday night.
But amid the chaos, many have praised the Manannan’s crew for keeping things afloat (literally and figuratively).
One passenger said: ‘Whilst all the chaos was going on, the staff were incredible and really deserve recognition! The crew were on their feet the whole journey, helping sick people, scared people and handing out sick bags, even when some of them were being sick themselves.’
Another added: ‘Shout out to the crew who were absolutely incredible. Really wish I’d had the courage to get everyone to give them a round of applause when we docked.’
Some passengers have even urged pet owners to get their dogs checked over after the crossing, following a warning about potential sickness from previous rough sailings.
The Steam Packet Company has been contacted for comment, though we’re guessing they’re still cleaning up.
