The White Helmet
There are many things that make the Manx police stand out from their counterparts across the sea, but the most obvious is the white helmet.
As the Isle of Man Constabulary Historian explains: ‘In 1960, the then Chief Constable, Christopher Beatty-Pownall, was approached by the House of Keys and Tourist Board with regards to introducing white helmets for summer time use during the tourist season. Several other UK coastal Constabularies had done similar and so the idea was copied here.
‘The idea was approved and from the Thursday before Good Friday in 1960, the helmets were to be worn for formal occasions as well as the summer season until the end of Manx Grand Prix in September. Initially the white helmets were only worn during daylight hours during the months mentioned above with the standard black helmets being worn during winter months and the hours of darkness in the summer.
‘However, in 2000, Chief Constable Mike Culverhouse announced that white helmets would be worn by male officers on foot patrol all year round.’
