Batten Down The Hatches!
Hold onto your hats (and everything else), because Storm Éowyn is charging towards the Isle of Man this Friday, bringing winds strong enough to rearrange your garden and disrupt your plans.
The Ronaldsway Met Office has issued an amber weather warning, which means it’s time to tie down the bins and brace the garden gnomes.
The storm will make its grand entrance as a yellow warning from 2am, but by 8am, things are turning amber as gales hit nearly 80mph.
Basically, if you had plans to walk the dog in the morning, forget it – your cute little canine might end up in Peel.
What to Expect:
- Peak Chaos: Between 8am and 1pm, Storm Éowyn will be throwing a proper tantrum with gusts up to 79mph. Expect trees to come down, trampolines to visit the neighbours, and travel disruptions galore.
- Coastal Overtopping: If you were planning on a scenic drive down Shore Road in Rushen or Castletown Prom, maybe reconsider unless you fancy getting a face full of seawater at 7am high tide.
- Things Calm Down-ish: The winds drop to a breezy 60mph in the afternoon and down to a mere gale later in the evening, so don’t relax too much.
A word from DEFA:
The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture has warned that trees already battered by Storm Darragh might not survive Éowyn’s wrath.
Stay out of glens and plantations unless you’re auditioning for Manx Tree Wrestling Championships.
If you spot any fallen trees, flying debris, or suspiciously airborne sheds, drop DEFA a line at forestry@gov.im.
Steam Packet Struggles:
The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is keeping an eye on things, but let’s be honest—if you’re booked on one of their four affected crossings, pack a picnic and prepare for delays or cancellations. Or just stay home and build a model ferry.
As it stands, Thursday evening’s Manxman crossing to Heysham, along with all three of Friday’s sailings, are all at risk of disruption or cancellation.
With the winds expected, surely even the keyboard warriors will understand if they’re scrapped (maybe not!).
Gef’s Top Tips for Surviving Storm Éowyn:
-
- Secure the Outdoor Stuff: Bins, trampolines, BBQs—if it’s not nailed down, it’s going on a tour of the island.
- Avoid Promenades: Unless you enjoy dodging flying deckchairs and inhaling salty sea spray.
- Stay Indoors: If you’re not in work, it’s a perfect excuse to binge-watch your favourite series, bake some cakes, or moan about the weather on Facebook.
- Be Kind to Pets: If you’ve got a nervous dog, put on the radio and give them cuddles – they don’t know Éowyn from a squirrel.
