Candlelit Vigil to be Held in Support of Ukraine

Islanders are invited to come together on this week to show their support for the people of Ukraine.

A candlelit vigil is being held in Villiers Square, Douglas, on Thursday at 6.30pm.

The vigil will start at 6.30pm with a prayer sung in Manx Gaelic by the Bunscoill Ghaelgagh choir, followed by a short address by  Mayor of Douglas, Raina Chatel. Other speakers include a representative of the island’s Ukrainian community and the Lord Bishop Peter Eagles, who will lead prayers.

One horn will be sounded to mark the beginning of a minute’s silence, which will be concluded by the Ukrainian National Anthem played by the Manx Youth Band, and the Manx Concert Brass.

Event organiser Claire Christian MHK, said: ‘People understandably feel helpless as they witness in the news and on social media the atrocities that continue to unfold in Ukraine. As the conflict began, our Island community quickly sprang into action, donating supplies and contributing towards the fundraising appeal by the Disasters Emergency Committee.

‘It is clear from the actions and generosity of our Manx community that there is an overwhelming desire to offer practical help to those affected by the war in Ukraine.   It therefore seemed the right thing to do that we should come together and demonstrate the strength of the Manx nation’s support for the Ukrainian people and world. In doing so, the people of the Isle of Man can join the chorus of voices around the globe condemning Russia’s aggression and calling for peace.’

Villiers Square will be lit up in the national colours of the Ukrainian flag – blue and yellow - as a sign of solidarity with the people of Ukraine and it is hoped that many landmark buildings across the island will follow suit.

Those attending the vigil are encouraged to wear blue and yellow, bring Ukrainian and Manx flags and sunflowers, while Manx registered charity Hands of Hope will be inviting donations.  Hands of Hope has a base in Romania, just 20km from the Ukraine border.  They are providing shelter and care as well as financial support to those fleeing Ukraine.
