Gef’s 30 Under 30 Winners: Q&A with David Lovelady
Ten categories. Thirty young visionaries making their mark on the Isle of Man. Introducing the all-new #Gef30Under30 winners: the next generation of our island’s leaders.
The Games Global Creativity winners are some of our island’s most artistic young minds — expressing themselves while also empowering their local creative communities. They are creating the art of tomorrow, no matter which medium they choose.
What is your name and age?
David Lovelady, age 26.
Job title or role in the community?
Photographer and content creator at David Lovelady Photography Limited.
How did you start your career or role in the community?
I started off with a love of all things cameras. I loved capturing things and I quickly realised I see places differently to others. You can put many people in the same location and very few images would be the same. The composition would be different as well as the feel of the picture. It’s an art form that allows you to showcase the world in your own way.
In one sentence, summarise your journey so far as a young and successful person under 30.
It has been sick! And so full of extraordinary opportunities. I have been to some amazing places and met great people, all of whom have helped shape me and who I am.
Tell us about your business/industry, is there something interesting about it that most people wouldn’t expect?
I am a photographer and content creator showcasing (mainly) our island, through my eyes. I offer various photography and videography services as well as assisting many businesses with content creation and social media. What wouldn’t people expect? The processing time for sure. I am often awake at 2am, coffee in hand, trying to make the best image.
Tell us about why you think you won the category you did?
Creativity – I imagine I won the award for my efforts to showcase our wonderful island, showcasing the outdoors and the things for people to do and see. I like to get creative with my work, show new places, in new ways to encourage people to get outside more, live life and enjoy our surroundings.
Who are your role models, either on-island or off, in your sector or outside of it?
Peter McKinnon. I have followed his journey since his early Youtube days and he inspired a lot of what pushes me to create.
What are your plans for the future?
Plans for the future are to continue to develop the brand and to grow my client base whilst also bringing other off-island clients into the picture.
What, for you, are the benefits of staying on or moving back to the island for young people under 30?
Firstly our outdoors. We have such amazing things on our doorstep – they’re not overly crowded, they’re not charged for, they’re not ruined by activity centres. It really is an amazing place. We have some of the best people who are happy to support and champion friends, colleagues and clients along with success and that is a culture which is passed across most Manx industries. There are also endless opportunities on the island for work of all different types and it is a great place to grow a business.
