Gef’s 30 Under 30 Winners: Q&A with Amy Gale

What is your name and age?
Amy Gale, age 24.
Job title or role in the community?
Lecturer in IT, Programme leader BSc Cyber Security at University College Isle of Man.
How did you start your career or role in the community?
After working in the private sector for a few years, I felt I wasn’t getting the job satisfaction that I would have hoped for. The opportunity to work at UCM as an IT lecturer arose, and after having such a positive experience there as a student, it was something I knew I wanted to pursue.
Tell us about why you think you won as a Trailblazer?
I believe that by working at the college, in a STEM subject, and being a young female, I am a trailblazer. Being an advocate for young women in IT and actively seeking to encourage them into this career path isn’t something I have seen a lot of on the Isle of Man (or not yet anyway!).
Who are your role models, either on-island or off, in your sector or outside of it?
Within the sector, Samantha Warren. She was my tutor throughout my time at UCM and is also a big advocate for women in IT.
What changes do you hope to see in your sector or community in the coming years?
I hope to see more women taking up IT as a career option. I would also like to see an Isle of Man specific cyber security course being developed.
What would you say to young people nominating themselves, or people nominating others, for 30 Under 30 in the future?
I would encourage people to do it. It may seem a little daunting, but it has been such a positive experience for me. It is always good to get your story out there – you never know who may read it and be inspired.
