Chief Minister Alf Cannan has responded to the explosion in Jersey this morning that has left three people dead and others missing.

The explosion rocked St Helier in the early hours, destroying a block of flats.

Mr Cannan tweeted: ‘Thoughts with all our friends in Jersey as they deal with this major incident particularly those directly impacted and the emergency services. Let us know if you need any support in the coming days.’

The Jersey Evening Post has reported: ‘Police chief Robin Smith has confirmed that one person has died, two have been taken to hospital and ‘about a dozen’ are still missing. At a press conference this morning, he warned it was likely there would be more fatalities.’

It has been confirmed that firefighters were called out on Friday night after residents reported smelling gas.
