Castletown’s Market Square Drama Won’t Drive Out Jac Stores

Jac Stores has clapped back at rumours that it’s shutting up shop in Castletown, despite ongoing drama over Market Square’s pedestrianisation.

The hardware, toy, and fishing tackle retailer, which also has stores in Peel, Douglas and Ramsey, says it’s sticking around—even if business has been made trickier by the loss of parking in the square.

Last week, Castletown Commissioners confirmed that Market Square will be closed to vehicles from March to September every year, a decision that’s split opinion in the town.

Supporters say it’ll make the area more vibrant for events and visitors, but some local traders aren’t happy, with one even calling it the ‘final nail in the coffin’ for businesses.

But Jac Stores isn’t backing down.

Managing Director Chris Blatcher made things crystal clear: ‘Despite ongoing challenges from the commissioners and the DOI minister, who closed the square with no valid reason, we are fully committed to Castletown and are not shutting the store.’

He also gave a cheeky nod to the upcoming elections, saying: ‘New commissioners have the opportunity to restore some much-needed sense to the town.’
