Disability is absolutely no barrier to taking part in an all inclusive ‘Wheel and Walk’ event organized by the MS Society on Saturday morning of May 20 at the NSC.
The event starts at 10.15am and lasts until 11.45am and participants do sponsored circuits of the 800 metre track to help raise awareness of the neurological disease and to raise funds for the island branch of the charity, which supports those living with MS.
‘We first held the first Wheel and Walk in 2017,’ said Derek Patience, chairman of the society in the island. ‘And it has become an annual fixture in our fundraising calendar and this year’s Wheel and Walk will be our 6th. 150 people took part last year, a number of whom have MS and they receive tremendous support from friends and family.
‘The previous 5 events have been very successful and have raised over £25,000 which helps the MS Society to fund an MS welfare officer to buying equipment to financing a variety of weekly fitness sessions.
‘Also, it’s a great fun event and we’ve had participants of all ages, from 80 year olds to babies and people with different levels of mobility. Some people walk unaided, others use walking sticks, crutches or walkers, others wheel their way round in wheelchairs or mobility scooters.’
The event is completely open for anyone to take part and people don’t need to have a connection with MS to join in. The whole idea is anyone and everyone can get involved.
‘MS comes in many different forms and strikes people in different ways,’ said Derek. ‘We endeavour to help people maintain their health and also to support them if and when the disease progresses.’
The event will be held whatever the weather on the day.
