There is a second free walk this weekend, starts 12.30pm at the entrance to St John’s Primary School car park.
Aside from explaining just how big St John’s station was, they also outlined the role the island’s railways played for transporting farm stock, commuters, tourists, mined ore and even televisions.
Now, as what was the Peel to Douglas line celebrates its 150th anniversary, the railways are an easy target for reform, especially given the current state of public finances.
But, while they no longer are used for mining or freight, they have taken up a role in a different sector altogether, tourism.
A review, ordered by the DoI, will determine just how much of a role the railways play, their value and how the benefits arising from their operation compare to the costs.
The operating model of the heritage railways as a publicly-owned and operated entity will also be examined, along with their location within the DoI and future potential use of the railways.
