Don’t Forget Gran! Government House Needs a Nudge for Birthday Cards

Got a centenarian in the family? Or a couple about to hit a big wedding milestone? You might need to give Government House a nudge.

Island residents are being reminded that, thanks to data protection rules, milestone birthdays and wedding anniversaries are no longer automatically flagged up to Government House.

That means it’s now down to friends, family, or helpful members of the public, to let them know when someone is about to celebrate something special.

Traditionally, congratulatory cards are sent out by His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor Sir John Lorimer, and in some cases by Their Majesties King Charles III, Lord of Mann, and Queen Camilla.

Cards from the King and Queen are available for anyone celebrating their 100th birthday, and every year after that (not a bad incentive to keep going strong).

Meanwhile, the Lieutenant Governor and Lady Philippa Lorimer also send cards for 90th birthdays, as well as 50th, 60th, 65th and 70th wedding anniversaries, alongside the milestones recognised by the monarch.

A spokesperson from Government House said: ‘If you know someone due to reach any of these milestones and you’d like them to receive a card, simply contact Government House and we’ll gladly arrange this for you.’

Anyone getting in touch will need to provide proof for certain milestones, including a birth certificate for 100th birthdays and marriage certificates for 60th, 65th and 70th anniversaries.

No certificates are needed for 90th birthdays or golden weddings.

Missed the date? Don’t panic, Government House says cards can still be issued up to six months after the big day.
