Grit Happens

The DoI has paused all planned and routine works by Highway Services today as its staff focus on weather works.

Many crews worked extended hours gritting yesterday evening and overnight keeping the main arterial routes and are likely to be out again later.

This morning the gritters have been back out re-salting the main arterial routes, and are ‘extending operations into other roads’.

The DoI said: ‘Current conditions on the main roads that have been gritted have been generally reported as good. The gritters are re-salting these roads to counter ice reforming. Other of our teams are focusing on salting roads and pavements around schools and other high trafficked areas before moving onto other areas.’

Salt Bae

The DoI has a limited number of staff tasked with re-filling salt bins. Obviously with 1,100 bins island wide it won’t get to all sites to inspect and re-fill them. If you find a salt bin is empty please report it on 850000 or use this website and quote the location and number of the box.

It added: ‘The public is reminded that they are welcome to use salt from our bins to treat pavements and roads in their neighbourhood. Salt for domestic use is available for collection at no charge at the Island’s four amenity sites. Just bring your own containers to take it away.

‘As well as Highway Services Staff, the Department’s Harbours and Estates teams are also salting their respective areas. Likewise teams from the Island’s local authorities are salting pavements and public areas in their towns and villages.

Mountain

It won’t be gritted, the DoI will see how it’s looking later on. The closure of the Mountain is from Barrule Park in Ramsey to the Creg Ny Baa. The Creg remains accessible from Douglas and Onchan.
