Last Orders at The Central

Another well-loved corner of Peel’s pub scene is about to disappear, as the Central Bar and Bistro will pull its final pint this Saturday, 6 September.

The team behind the venue, who have been there for 25 years, said the closure comes after ‘many months’ of battling tough trading conditions.

They’ve reassured anyone clutching gift vouchers that they’ll either be reimbursed or honoured before closing day.

The Central has worn a lot of hats over the years.

Known locally as The Deaf House (two former landlords were famously hard of hearing), it went on to become a Saturday night home for Manx traditional music in the 1970s, hosted teenage soft-drink sessions in the 90s, briefly rebranded as Christabel’s, and eventually circled back to being the Central.

It’s a proper historic pub with character and charm.

Online, locals have been sharing memories, from cosy winter evenings by the fire with the dog in tow, to darts games where the wall took as much of a battering as the board.

It’s another sad loss for Peel’s already shrinking pub landscape (still crying about the Legion more than a year on), and one that’s left many hoping for a last-minute miracle.

Until then, this weekend marks the end of an era for a building that’s been at the heart of the town for decades.
