Mind What You Flush

Raw sewerage is discharged via the Laxey and Garwick outfalls

After some sewage related items found their way onto Laxey Beach, Garff Comissioners have asked people to consider what they’re flushing own the loo.

Raw sewerage is discharged via the Laxey and Garwick outfalls, as the parish waits for a treatment plant.

In recent weeks the Commissioners have received several reports of ‘sewerage related items’ that have been found on Laxey beach and floating in the bay, with the issue has been exacerbated by the current spell of warm settled weather and low levels of water in the Laxey river.

The authority said: ‘To help address this issue, it is essential that individuals exercise proper waste disposal practices. Encouraging everyone to dispose of non-flushable items in the appropriate bins can significantly reduce pollution and preserve the cleanliness of our environment.

‘Garff Commissioners cannot stress enough the importance of responsible waste disposal. Flushing only human waste (pee and poo) and toilet paper is crucial to prevent this type of pollution on our beaches and in our seas. Other items, such as sanitary products, wet wipes, cotton balls, should never be flushed down the toilet.

‘Let us all work together to raise awareness and promote responsible behaviour, ensuring that we protect the natural beauty of Laxey and Garwick and preserve the health of our ecosystems. By being mindful of our actions and making informed choices about waste disposal, you can contribute to a better beach and water sport experience.’
