Police Launch Weapons Amnesty

From Monday anyone who has any unlicensed weapons, ammunition, etc, can hand them over to the Police without the threat of prosecution.

The record of each weapon will be checked, so it isn’t a chance to get away with handing in any murder weapons you may have in your possession.

Held every few years, the police offer the amnesty for both unlicensed and licensed firearms, ammunition or any other weapons you may have. In this past, this has included souvenirs that grandparents picked up during the war or things found in homes that you don’t know what to do with.

The amnesty will run from Monday January 16 to Wednesday February 1 and weapons can be handed into any police station.

If you wish to bring a firearm to a Police station it is very important to ensure that it is secured and made safe and any ammunition has been removed. It should be transported to any island Police station in a safe manner. In other words, don’t take your sawn-off on the bus in a Tesco bag (other supermarkets are available).

Anyone who has any explosive devices such as grenades SHOULD NOT bring them to Police stations under any circumstances, but contact Police Headquarters on 631212.

The Police said that last two amnesties were a success and it hopes this one will be the same.

2019

The last amnesty was held in 2019 and saw 53 firearms, 80 knives/swords/machetes , six prohibited  articles / noxious spray/knuckle duster etc, 520 rounds of ammunition and a crossbow all handed in.

The previous one in 2017 also received a decent amount of kit.
