Port Erin Could Get Bigger Co-Op Store

Published

Hold on to your reusable bags, Port Erin – a shiny new Co-op might be on the way!

Plans have been submitted to turn a former chapel-turned-florist-turned-funeral directors (some journey) into a bigger, fancier Co-op on Station Road.

And when we say bigger, we mean 500sqm of shopping space with 23 parking spots, including two electric charging stations for your eco-friendly chariots.

But wait, there’s more!

In addition to being somewhere to grab your bread and milk, the site would also boast six swanky tourist apartments.

There will be four two-bedroom and two one-bedroom apartments with six parking spaces.

If you’re wondering why Port Erin needs another Co-op when it already has one (also on Station Road, by the way), the applicant JM Project Management said in the planning statement that the existing store is ‘too small to cope with demand by itself’.

The design will be based on the Crosby Co-op, complete with local Pooilvaaish stone, a slate roof, and fancy white-rendered walls.

While it doesn’t explicitly state it in the application, it looks like the current building will be demolished to create the new store alongside the six tourist apartments.

The application will be considered by the planning committee in due course.
