Prom Benches: Sitting Pretty or Style Over Comfort?
Douglas Promenade’s new benches have got people talking – and scratching their heads.
Installed with a modern twist, these backless seats have left some walkers and residents a bit baffled.
They’re definitely not your traditional promenade benches, and that has sparked quite the debate.
One bemused resident told us, ‘They’re awful, too modern and no backs on them! How are older folk going to get on with them?’
Another chimed in with, ‘They’re not in keeping with the Victorian Promenade, a complete waste of money’.
So, what’s the deal with these controversial seats?
Well according to Douglas City Council, these benches are all about bringing a ‘modern and contemporary’ vibe to the prom.
They’re not here to replace the traditional seating but to add a new twist to the mix.
And there’s a plan, too: the concrete benches can be customised, meaning backrests and even tables could be added later.
For now, each bench sports just one backrest, but the Council hints at ‘mixing it up a bit’ in the future.
As for the cost I hear you ask? That’s still a mystery.
Love them or hate them, these benches are here to stay – at least for now. So, take a seat (probably uncomfortably) and let the debate roll on!
