Rare Chance To Dip Into TT Corner Only Riders Normally Tackle

Published

on

Motorists are in for a treat (or a terror ride, depending on your confidence behind the wheel) as the Department of Infrastructure (DoI) has announced a rare chance for everyday drivers to tackle the legendary Governor’s Dip (albeit in the wrong direction) – a section of the TT course usually reserved for adrenaline-fueled racers.

This once-in-a-blue-moon opportunity comes as the DOI prepares to fell a precariously leaning tree near Governor’s Bridge roundabout, which has been threatening to embrace passing vehicles thanks to the relentless battering from Storm Darragh.

The tree has apparently taken up a new hobby: pole dancing with a streetlight. Sadly, safety comes first, so it has to go.

From 9.30am to 3.30pm on Thursday, February 27 (tomorrow), the Onchan-bound carriageway will be closed from Victoria Road to Governor’s Bridge roundabout.

As a result, traffic heading towards Onchan will be diverted down Governor’s Dip.

Yes, you read that right – you too can experience what racers face on the slowest corner on the TT course, albeit at a much more sensible speed and without the cheering crowds.

Local TT superfan Derek from Sulby was spotted in full leathers, standing next to his Ford Fiesta, revving the engine (probably unnecessarily).

‘I’m absolutely ecstatic,’ he said, grinning from ear to ear. ‘I’ve waited years for this. I might even time myself… although I’ll be sticking to 20mph, of course. Safety first!’ Derek, we salute you.

The DoI has kindly asked drivers to approach the area with caution.

And while it might be tempting to pretend you’re the next Michael Dunlop, please remember this isn’t a time trial.

Governor’s Dip is not suitable for long vehicles either, so if you’re hauling a caravan or driving a lorry, it’s probably best to take the scenic route.

Meanwhile, the road between Governor’s Bridge roundabout and Victoria Road will be one-way towards Douglas, so keep an eye out for the signage and don’t get caught going the wrong way.

So, if you fancy adding ‘drove down Governor’s Dip’ to your list of Isle of Man bragging rights along with visiting all ten Tesco stores, Thursday is your chance.

Just don’t expect a podium finish or a laurel wreath at the end. And Derek, if you’re reading this, we expect a full race report.
