A Bus Vannin spokesperson, probably tired of hearing about phantom 10ps over their morning coffee, explained: ‘It’s a test transaction that the company performs just to make sure that the card isn’t reported lost or stolen. But it only ever appears as a pending authorisation. Once it is complete, the correct amount is charged, and the 10p disappears.’

That’s right, folks. The 10p doesn’t go into some mystical Bus Vannin vault. It simply vanishes into the ether once the transaction is confirmed, like your will to live when the bus arrives two minutes early and you miss it.
