Morning Momentum’s Formula For A Happy Life

Published

on

The journey of Morning Momentum since they first began in 2021 has been one of community and perseverance.

Elliot Cureton, who has been part of the group since the beginning described the formula they use as: Early rise, exercise or movement, cold water exposure and community. They are the four pillars Morning Momentum use collectively all over the island to kickstart their day.

Elliott said: ‘So the early rise speaks for itself. Cold water exposure speaks for itself. The movement side of it can be anything. It started off with us just running. And for a long time, we really wanted to encourage more people to get involved. But the problem was people saw it as quite masculine and it was just a bunch of lads running, so it kind of put people off.

‘Slowly but surely, we managed to get people walking, and having them in the videos walking, and being able to tell people, oh, we have a walking group now, naturally, more people felt safer to come along and felt like it was more manageable for them.’

Over the course of four years a community has been born and nurtured through Morning Momentum. Different people from all walks of life participate, including a 15-year-old boy who has autism.

Elliott described him as ‘part of the family’, continuing on to say: ‘That’s a big word that we can use. Ramsey feels like a family. Douglas now feels like a family. Down south, they feel like a family together.’

There is zero charge for anyone interested in joining one of the groups across various parts of the island.

Morning Momentum are well and truly taking over with plans in the pipeline for expansion all over the rock.

Ian Kirk added: ‘It’s hard to put into words the feeling when you’re getting up in the morning, you’re walking into a freezing cold Irish Sea, and the sun starts to rise over the horizon, you’re looking at this fireball while you’re in this freezing cold environment, the bonding experience that creates, and the feeling that you have when you get out is like magic.’

The idea of beginning your morning with something positive has been proven to help with multiple different health issues such as depression, anxiety, self confidence, self worth and respiratory issues (just to list a few).

Michael Howland who has been with the group since the beginning said: ‘I most certainly see I’m much more resilient since doing it, my mental state is so strong it’s like nothing can phase me in the day, which I put it down to the cold water.’
