Honestly… what are they putting in the Manx water?

This week, THREE island couples are celebrating an incredible 70 years of marriage, and we’ve rounded them up because, frankly, that’s too wholesome (and slightly unbelievable) not to.

Love at First Dancefloor

Barbara (92) and Herbert (96) Christian’s story starts in proper romantic fashion, a dance at the Talk of the Town in Ramsey back in 1955.

Two weeks later… he proposed. No messing about.

A slight hiccup came when Herbert had a motorcycle accident, delaying their big day by three weeks, but they still tied the knot on March 17, 1956 at St Olaves Church.

Seventy years on, they celebrated with three children, four grandchildren and a great-grandchild, plus a letter from the King himself. Not bad going.

A Proposal on the Mersey

Nona and John Welsh (both 95) met on a blind date in Liverpool in 1954, thanks to a well-meaning cousin playing matchmaker.

Fast forward two years and John popped the question on a ferry across the River Mersey (smooth).

They married at Arbory Church in March 1956 and now live in Ballasalla, still going strong decades later.

Their secret? Nona says gardening, lunch together and crosswords. John keeps it simple: ‘Keep breathing in and out.’

Solid advice, to be fair.

Bakers, Banter and 70 Years Strong

Ann (90) and Jack (91) Kaighin celebrated their anniversary on March 24, 1956 after marrying at Braddan Church, and even made the telly thanks to a brilliant piece by Josh Stokes on Granada Reports.

The Laxey couple have lived a full life together, running a bakery, serving the community and basically becoming local legends.

Their secret? ‘Honesty and forgiveness,’ they told ITV… along with not holding grudges and always finding the funny side.

Jack added he was ‘head over heels’ when he first met Ann, and, crucially, still is.

Three couples. Three incredible stories. And proof that maybe… just maybe… love (and a good cup of tea) really does last forever.
