Following discussions with Ronaldsway Met Office about the icy conditions forecast for later in the day DoI staff will be pre-gritting the island’s main arterial routes this afternoon.

The department said the timing and scope of gritting has been determined to be most effective against the expected weather conditions.

It added: ‘It has been an extremely busy weekend for our staff. In addition to our normal winter standby staffing provision, others from our construction and maintenance teams volunteered to work through the weekend to salt roads across the Island in response to the emerging conditions. In addition to the staff out on the road network gritting, others were restocking the most heavily used salt bins.

‘We fielded approximately 280 calls for assistance from the public on Saturday, with another 80 on Sunday.

The public made good use of many of our salt bins over the last three days. We have diverted staff today from their scheduled duties to refill the depleted bins. Each bin is identified by a unique number found on its lid. If you get in touch to tell us that a particular bin needs to be re-stocked please quote this number as it eases identification of the location. There are over 1000 public salt bins located across the island.’
