Section of the Raad Reopens

Part of the island’s stunning Raad-ny-Foillan has reopened this week.
The Maughold Head to Port Mooar section is now useable again following repair and reinstatement work.
As well as replacement the rotten bridge, materials from the beach were used to create drystone walling which has created a sturdy and wider footpath around the bay and replaced the sections that had been eroded by storms.
The DoI explained: ‘The main boardwalks leading to the headland from Port Mooar beach have been replaced, raised and extended meaning people won’t be stepping off into sections which were still boggy in winter.
‘Banks have been cut back and wooden edging installed along areas where there was erosion and undercutting on this section and finally a new boardwalk has been installed across the landslip and rocky section at Port Mooar to ease access from the beach.’
There is still work to do further round the footpath which will be completed in due course and while work has been done to improve the path, it does still remain tricky underfoot in areas.
Dry stone walling was completed by Stonemasons IOM Ltd, the replacement bridge was built by Island Drainage & Groundwork Ltd, with all other works by the Department’s PROW team.
