Today’s Special: A Whole Day Dedicated to Chips, Cheese, and Gravy

Eateries all over the island are celebrating Chips Cheese & Gravy Day today, a now-annual tradition falling on the last Monday of January.

Launched by Gef in 2018, it’s a tribute to the ultimate comfort food—giving it a well-deserved moment to revel in the spotlight.

Since then, more and more cafés, diners, and chippies have joined the fun in true Manx style, with many offering special discounts to entice devoted CC&G fans.

The Terrace Chippy—official partner for Gef’s CC&G Day 2025—will be open from 11:30am to 10pm, ensuring nobody goes without their cheesy, gravy-smothered fix. Over at The Islander Chippy, doors open at 4:30pm, while Port Erin Chippy is extending its hours from 11:30am to 9pm for anyone avoiding the capital’s hustle.

The Handley family, meanwhile, has been in the fish-and-chip game since 1981.

With nearly 44 years under their belt, Mark Handley says chips cheese and gravy wasn’t always the crowd-pleaser it is today.

‘You never seen it at all in the first decade of doing it, then all of a sudden we’ve seen it developing,’ he said.

‘We used to grate our own cheese, then we had to buy it grated because we couldn’t keep up.’

‘It’s really grown more popular the last 10-15 years.’

To celebrate the day, The Terrace Chippy is dishing up CC&G at a discounted rate of £5.50, available in both the takeaway and the diner.
