‘It’s Like Christmas Day Isn’t It!’

It’s that glorious Monday where us Manxies puts aside all pretenses and celebrates the holy trinity of comfort food: chips, cheese, and gravy.

If you’re not already salivating, are you even Manx?

First launched in 2018 by none other than Gef (yes, us!), Chips, Cheese & Gravy Day has quickly become a date we all hold dear—like a second Christmas, but with more cheese. We’re talking freshly fried Manx potatoes, smothered in gooey Manx Cheddar and slathered with rich beef gravy.

Once a minor mention on chippy menus, “CC&G” has grown to legendary status.

Mark Handley, whose family has been in the fish-and-chip biz since 1981 (running The Terrace, The Islander, and Port Erin Chippy), remembers the early days when you’d rarely see cheese on chips—shocking, we know.

“You never saw it in the first decade,” he said.

“Then it really took off and we couldn’t grate cheese fast enough.”

These days, Mark calls Chips, Cheese & Gravy Day “like Christmas,” which basically means extended hours, jam-packed queues, and enough spuds to feed the island three times over.

Over at The Terrace, they’re dishing up this molten masterpiece for just £5.50. The only problem you’ll have is deciding whether you want to eat it there or do a sneaky takeaway for the sofa. (We fully support both options—no judgment here.)

Mark has a simple message for anyone on the fence: “You’ll either love it or hate it, but you should try it!”

So if you’ve never experienced the saucy, cheesy heaven that is chips, cheese, and gravy, you’ve still got time to join the party.

Grab a fork, some napkins, and maybe a spare pair of trousers—this is one comfort food adventure you won’t want to miss.

Happy Chips, Cheese & Gravy Day from all of us at Gef—may your chips be crispy, your cheese be melty, and your gravy be extra saucy!
